| The first time I saw Matthew perform was at the Melody Ballroom in PDX opening up for Fugazi when he was in the New Bad Things. I had no idea who the New Bad Things where, when I walked into the room and looked at the chaos on happening on stage I was floored, who the hell where these kids!?! Unfortunately they where on their last song and I quickly lost track of them... it wasn't until a few years later that I actually figured out that was who I had seen... what does this have to do with Hein you ask... it shows that he sticks in your mind.
A few years later I came across the Roses and Ramen cassette, and fell in love with the quiet boy with the guitar. Next I came across the Last Chance 7", which to this day is one of the most beautiful collections of music I have ever heard, start to finish it is stunning. It was about that time that I realized I needed to get into contact with Matthew. There was an ill fated attempt to have him down to Eugene to play (Eugene has never been kind to Hein), the weather was terrible and by the time he made it the show was over and they booted us out of the EMU when we tried to put on an afterhours performance (I'll never forgive the EMU for that, ever). Finally I made it up to PDX and got to spend time with Hein, he showed me all around Ladds Addition (crazy PDX Neighborhood) at 2 in the morning, we hung out and talked and I stayed over. I made a few journeys up to Portland over the next few months and finally got to see him perform at the Umbra Penumbra Cafe, and my god, he has this thing about him, the way he plays is so off the cuff, he's witty and charming and sincere and silly, all at the same time. Wow. It wasn't until I moved up to PDX a few years later that we ended up working together. The first item was the split 7" with Ms. Dougher, a few tracks that where started by Larry at Jackpot! and finished by me in Ben's basement. The next up was the "compact." CD that we put together for a trip to CMJ the label took in 2000. So far that's it, but we hope and pray here at the label that someday we will see more songs from this charming young man. |
