4/2/15 - Spring Forward
We have many things going on right now. We have the Red Red Meat reissue project well underway, Bunny Gets Paid is the next record coming out, fingers crossed at the end of April, you can check out how that's all going over at the PledgeMusic site, or pick up your copy of Manger here in our own shop now!
Next up is 1939 Ensemble's stunning sophomore effort, Black Diamond Pearl, they are a juggernaut of drums/vibes/horns/noise and this record is a stunner. It was produced by John McEntire of Tortoise and there's a release show here in Portland at The Secret Society on April 25th, it will be epic. Then they'll be heading down the cost in May, playing in SF on May 11th at the Elbo Room and then LA on May 12th at Satellite. You need to see these guys live, and you can preorder Black Diamond Pearl here.
We've been working with our cohorts over at Hired Hand on the soundtrack to Christian Kiefer's new book The Animals, it's called What You Have Come For Is Death and you can pick up one of the 250 copies we pressed on bright red wax here.
We've had the very good fortune to work on 2 new records with our friends at Woodphone Records. First up is the second album by Alialujah Choir, Big Picture Show. A lovely album full of voices and amazing folk songs done up right by folks from Norfolk & Western, Weinland and Hook & Anchor. The other record is the latest solo outing from Black Prarie front woman Annalisa Tornfelt, The Number 8. Imagine if Patsy Cline made a solo acoustic album, this is the caliber of song craft we're looking at with this record. If you get a chance to see Annalisa live you will be mesmerized. You can pick up copies of each of these gems at our shop.
W've also go a few radical Record Store Day 2015 releases, a split single from Eyelids and their friends The Phoenix Foundation from New Zealand, as well as a vinyl reissue of the 2001 debut from The Thermals own Hutch & Kathy! Both are limited to 500 copies and both can only be found in your local record shop on 4/18/15! Later in the year we'll hear more from Eyelids as well as Red Red Meat, and so much more! Thanks for listening everyone and happy spring to you all! xoJBR
10/14/14 - Red Red Meat
“…if you can picture a scrubby patch of weeds and in it a clump of gauze, possibly soiled, twitching in the breeze, and the disconnected image of decay stirs something in you, you're on your way to falling in love with Red Red Meat.” – Pitchfork
We are exceedingly excited to announce that we are working with Chicago's Red Red Meat, SubPop Records and PledgeMusic to reissue the entire catalog of this seminal 90's rock n' roll band on vinyl.
We're going to be working in reverse chronological order, starting with There's a Star Above the Manger Tonight, which will be out November 11th, 2014. From there we'll work our way back to Bunny Gets Paid (March 2015), Jimmywine Majestic (August 2015) and finally, never before on vinyl, Red Red Meat (October 2015).
We will be presenting each album in an expanded double LP format, which will include additional tracks from the same time period as the albums original release – culled from singles, session tapes and the bands personal archives. Each release will have new artwork created for it by a different artist, using the original as inspiration.
We'll be presenting this series with the help of the folks at PledgeMusic. This will allow us to offer you all a behind the scenes look at the reissue process, as well as access to a bunch of other cool items we're cooking up – posters, postcards, colored vinyl, test pressings, archival photos, original album artwork and several other awesome things we've yet to come up with. One of the items we're most excited about is a limited edition 8 LP handmade 'book' we're putting together that will contain a uniquely colored version of each LP in the bands catalog. We're only making 100 of them.
For the artwork for There's a Star Above the Manger Tonight we got in touch with John Herndon, a stellar tattoo artist, painter, and the drummer for Tortoise. He made 18 amazing paintings, the cover and one for each song. We added 5 new tracks to the running order, and included the full version of Just Like an Egg on Stilts on vinyl for the first time. The record was recut by the original mastering engineer, Roger Seibel at SEA Mastering in Arizona and it sounds spectacular!
We cordially invite you to learn more about the project and preorder your copy of the album here.
9/1/14 - Bring on the ending of summer!
It's almost fall here in Portland, our very favorite time of year and we have many exciting things to bring you up to speed on. First things first, we're working on a new website, so, though you may be here now reading this, you will so see something new and fancy and really awesome. As with most things though, it takes a while, usually a longer while than one originally anticipates, so we're updating the old site now, because we can!
Okay, next up! Hook & Anchor. This record came out in July, and it really is a stunning piece of work by some very dear friends. It is the most "country" album we have ever put out and we couldn't be happier about that. Think of a more bluegrass tinged Fleetwood Mac, with a lot of old school Nashville thrown in for good measure. The first pressing of this record is limited to 259 hand numbered coke bottle clear copies and we strongly encourage you to pick up a copy over at the catalog before they all fly away.
Our good friend and constant collaborator Adam Selzer has just put together his first book of short stories entitled Leaving. The book comes equipped with audio versions of the stories each scored by a different composer, Cory Gray (Carcrashlander), John Askew (Tracker), Peter Broderick & Raúl Pastor Medall (Raulesson). One can either choose to read, listen, or listen and read along to these compelling stories which render sparse language, surprising bursts of gallows humor, and a sense of compassion for the lost souls that inhabit them. We'll start shipping these around 9/16 and you can preorder your copy here.
Last up in our announce able items list is the debut by Portland's Eyelids. We've been listening to these fellows play music in there various projects for 20+ years now and have never been more impressed with them than we are now. Their pedigrees are impeccable but really it's their songwriting that's the critical factor here. On their debut album, 854, John & Chris have created a stunning collection of buzzing, catchy songs that encompass all things beautiful, lopsided and rock. The record will be out on October 14th and we'll be co-releasing the CD & LP with our comrades over at Schizophonic Record, while the fine folks at Burger Records will handling cassette duties! There's even a west coast tour to follow this all up! The first 150 of you to get there can preorder your limited edition translucent olive green copy of the album here.
The new site should launch in a few more weeks and you can expect another update from us very shortly.
Thanks for listening and have a great fall folks! xoJBR
4/8/14 - MØTRIK
MØTRIK is a new combo of some of our favorite Portland musicians, Cord Amato (Wow & Flutter), Dave Fulton, Lee Ritter & Erik Golts. Channeling the driving force that is the autobahn, employing at the best metric drone krautrauk enthusiasm. Meticulous and introspective, building precision out of drone based jamming. Another in our series of limited edition vinyl releases, 100 copies, hand-screened & number jackets. You'll want to grab yours here now!
12/29/13 - Carcrashlander
The newest release from Cory Gray via his Carcrashlander moniker is hitting the streets on January 14th, 2014. We've put together a very special limited edition vinyl release of 100 copies for A Plan To Tell The Future and are having a lovely little release show at Valentines here in Portland on January 13th to celebrate. You can preorder your copy here now!
12/6/13 - Fruit Bats!
We have a limited number of posters left over from the Mouthfuls shows we did in November. They are hand screened and were designed by Frida Clements and are available here now!
We sold out of the limited edition version of Mouthfuls so quickly! Thanks to everyone who snatched one up, we really appreciate the support, we had a ton of fun putting those together and we hope you dug your one of a kind treasure! We've chosen one of the hand painted jackets done by Annie Beedy to be THE jacket for the black vinyl repress and it's looking like we'll be able to ship them around January 21st, so if you missed out, you can still pick up a copy of this amazing record, with some equally stunning artwork right here.
Thanks for making 2013 such a great year for us folks, and we're looking forward to seeing even more of you in 2014!
10/12/13 - Shelley Short & The Sure Shots: Wake The Dreamers
We are pleased to announce the release of our dear friend Shelley Shorts new record Wake The Dreamers on November 1st. For this album Shelley culled through a list of songs she had compiled of songwriters who had inspired her over the years and went into Type Foundry Studios with Chris Funk, Nate Query (Decemberists / Black Prarie), Jon Neufeld (Black Prarie), Cory Gray (Carcrashlander), Brian Wright (Pure Bathing Culture) & Alia Farah (Alialujah Choir) and recorded 11 of those songs straight to tape, no muss no fuss, great players, simple arrangements and Shelley's stunning voice. This is a very limited release of 100 copies of vinyl with special handmade covers. You can preorder the album here now, or if you are in the vicinity of Portland, OR on November 1st you can come pick up a copy at the release show!

To add to the excitement Fruit Bats will be embarking on a short tour of the Pacific Northwest to celebrate the release. They will be performing Mouthfuls in it's entirety along with a selection of other classic material.

8/22/13 - Loftus REPRESS
Thanks to all of you for your support of the Loftus record. We are now out of the colored vinyl and are repressing black vinyl as we type this. We expect to have them in around September 20th and you can preorder your copy here now! More news soon and thanks again for being awesome!
5/30/13 - Perhapst & Loftus Pre-orders
A new album is here from Perhapst! One of our favorite song writers, Mr. John Moen, whom we've been loving since his days in the Maroons, is putting out his sophomore album as Perhapst with us here at Jealous Butcher! Revise Your Maps will be released on June 25th on CD & LP and the first 25 folks who preorder their copies will get a fancy pen and ink drawing from the man himself. So much poppy goodness, you will love this one!
We also have the vinyl debut of one of the most amazing collaborations of the mid-90's Chicago rock scene you've ever heard. Members of Rex, Tortoise, Red Red Meat & June of 44 spent time in a truck stop studio and came up with the songs for Loftus playing a kind of musical game. This record was originally slated to be released by a major label, which is kinda crazy when you listen back to it. Weird fuzzed out blues ruminations over disjointed sound collages. It's amazing and we're bringing it to you on both maroon and clear vinyl. You can preorder your copy of this here as well.
3/8/13 - 1939 Ensemble
The debut album by Portland's 1939 Ensemble, Howl & Bite, will be out April 16th. We are very excited to be working with Jose & David on this record. It's a wonderful mix of Tortoise influenced post-rock and jazz exploration - drums, vibes and noise generators - such a great listen all the way through. This one is vinyl & digital only and is available for preorder on the site now. They are throwing an awesome release show on March 29th at Mississippi Studios if you happen to be here in Portland, it'll be a doozy for sure.
On another note - we have completely redesigned the way our shopping cart buttons work! There is now one button per format and ALL SHIPPING CHARGES are taken care of on the PayPal end of things. This will hopefully make things less confusing to our friends overseas...however...friends overseas be warned, postage rates have risen considerably in the last month, it's around $18 to get a single LP to the UK, yikes! We totally sympathize with how much this stinks, however, please understand it is totally out of our control. If you have any questions about any of these changes please drop us a line and we'll do our best to answer them in a timely and thorough fashion.
2/3/13 - Happy New Year!
Welcome to JBR's 21st year of operation. We're starting off with a repress of M. Ward's Transfiguration of Vincent LP. We've got a limited quantity on a lovely green vinyl, and if you'd like to add it to your collection please give a click here and place your order! We've got a lot more in the works including the debut LP by Portland's 1939 Ensemble and the sophomore effort by Decemberists drummer John Moen's Perhapst. Look for vinyl from Fruit Bats and Califone later this year as well. Last year was aces, and we're going to keep things moving along for 2013. Thanks for everything and we'll be in touch soon.
