Made for TV Movie, what can I say... to put it simply these kids rock, the rock hard and they mean it. Dan (guitar, vox), Tanya (bass) and PJ (drums) play some of the greatest, most sincere music that I have heard in a long time. They draw from their past (Bisybackson, Kind of Like Spitting) but are never ruled by it. Their stage presence is a force to be reckoned with; they command your attention.
Dan is (in a good way) a maniac on the guitar, going from mic, to pedals, to some bizarre device on top of his amp, then back to the mic in course of a few seconds. He pulls all this off without sounding scattered and maintains an emotional intensity that you have to see to fully understand.
Tanya is the stoic, swaying back and forth, holding down the stage and keeping the songs on course.
PJ makes it all happen; he is, for lack of a more appropriate word, a powerhouse. He is one of the loudest drummers I have ever heard, but he is also one of the most precise, intricate and interesting. This guy does not fuck around, he plays beats that fit the songs perfectly, do you get it? The songs aren't played TO the beat; the beat fits IN the song... now you get it.
The thing is that you put these three people together and you get so much more, each of them brings their own thing to the mix and it makes the others shine all the brighter. The interactions between them are what put them over the top, without one the rest would fall.
But fear not, there is no fall in site. They are on their first tour of the US this autumn, already talking about the next time they go out. They have just released their first album "The Story of my Heroics", the CD here on Jealous Butcher and the LP finding it's home on Donut Friends. They have 2 tracks on the new Jealous Butcher compilation "Compact", at least one of which is new, and may have some more compilation appearances in the works.
As a side note a friend of mine saw them play the other day and said they sounded like Big Star, which I thought odd, as I can't imagine Alex Chilton screaming into his guitar pick-up (no offense). Then I thought about it a bit and it made sense, they too write great dirgey pop songs, they just play them with a tad more ferocity. |
