| Rally Boy is made up of three outstanding songwriters, Dan Blaker: guitar/vocals, Ryan Matheson: guitar/vocals and Justin Scott: bass/vocals. The three of them manage to fashion catchy-as-hell pop songs out of what Rocket columnist Scott Lewis calls "complex and precise sonic explorations." Unassuming pop songs with subtly complex guitar interplay, all held together by the heavy hand of drummer Robert Ham. |

| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 3/11/2003 RALLY BOY ANNOUNCES DELAY ON FORTHCOMING ALBUM Portland rock combo Rally Boy announced today there would be further delays on their forthcoming album, their first full-length and their first release since 1997's warmly tolerated "Hooks & Crutches" EP. The album--tentatively titled "You Call Yourself a Player...In That Ride?"--has suffered numerous setbacks since it was first announced eight years ago. It was then, in August of 1995, that the band recorded the first aborted version of the album, utilizing the then-popular "lo-fi" aesthetic. A few months later the band booked time in a proper studio and recorded 10 tracks, ultimately yielding half of a 7" single derided by Magnet for employing a "tough guy persona." After a few slightly more successful sessions, resulting in two completed (but unreleased) EPs, the band re-entered the studio, this time with My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields producing. Hoping to cash in on the band's newfound notoriety, former label Jealous Butcher Records released "Hooks & Crutches," an EP made up of tracks from the unreleased EPs, as a stopgap cutout bin filler. Then, four years later, things reached an impasse with Shields. The only completed track, a 45-minute sine wave entitled "Test Tone 1," was rejected outright by the band's label, Lomo Recordings, and the band and label successfully sued each other to get out of the contract. This was followed by seven months of extensive touring in and around Chico, CA, and a sold-out show at CBGB's in September of 2001, following which they booked some time at Type Foundry, blindfolded each other, stood in a room together and recorded drum tracks for about fifteen songs, to be used as click tracks for later drum overdubs. "Dan wants to be able to remix our unreleased, unfinished tracks," explained band spokesman Ryan Matheson. "And that requires total separation between each and every instrumental track." He hesitated. "And vocal tracks, too. Theoretically." Asked about the album's future, Matheson admitted "there's no way of Bass player Justin Scott and drummer Bob Ham were not in attendance at thepress conference, as guitarist Dan Blaker forgot to tell them about it. |
