Recorded at the legendary Type Foundry Studio, Selzer (who produced and engineered the record himself) has long demonstrated the ability to craft exquisitely defined, sonically arresting, folk-tinted songs, but with A Gilded Age he leads Norfolk and Western to flex their songwriting and arranging muscle with dramatic, singular results.

Never before has the band so defied the usual descriptors, and comparisons. The songs cascade dynamically and unrelentingly--elevating the long-form EP format to new heights-- beginning with the trademark Victrola and string swell opening of Porch Destruction to the positively invigorating (not a word usually associated with the band's recorded work) overdriven guitar and banjo attack of the title track. Each song serves the whole, adding layers of depth, drama, and subtlety to an undeniable tapestry of music. The songs are immanently accessible, borrowing from pop motifs more than past collections with the well honed rhythm section of Blumberg and bassist hit man Dave Depper (Blanket Music, The Village Green), but they also challenge the listener with terrific bursts of texture from Selzer's thick guitar, Amanda Lawrence's romantic viola, Cory Gray's (Desert City Soundtrack, Graves) hellish, equestrian trumpet squalls, and Tony Moreno's multi-instrumental savvy. Moreover, Selzer is in rare form as a lyricist, exercising restraint and letting the arrangements elucidate the moral dilemmas of his taught song narratives.

Clyde & New Orleans may be the centerpiece of Selzer's provocative juxtapositions, calling on current events (Hurricane Katrina, The Edgar Ray Killen trial) to forge a work of short fiction set in the sixties, riffing on the human drama unfolding in contemporary America. The "wrath of God" is captured in an instrumental bridge, sending the snappy waltz time off the rails in an unholy, sinister, gut wrenching cacophony. This dramatic effect--interplay of light and dark, loud and soft--is expertly realized by Norfolk and Western throughout duration of the LP.

- Chad Crouch, HUSH Records

The LP release of "A Gilded Age" features 3 tracks not to be found on its digital companion. 2 covers, Seven Seas by Echo & The Bunnymen and Marie by Towns Van Sandt plus a remake of Border, Oklahoma, originally off the "Centralia" record, hand picked by the JBR staff.

TRACKS

Side A

Bullets

Close The Door

Side B

Blood

The Glow

RELEASE DATE

12/14/2006

Just ahead were headlights and the sound of a horn. Thankfully, the engine hadn't stalled. I made it back through the median and over to the westbound lane. The car was pretty messed up, it was shaking badly, smelled like fuel and every light in the dashboard relating to maintenance was lit up like a party. I wasn't hurt, but I had to stop in Bismarck for the night and call the insurance company and rent a motel room. None of the airbags deployed which is fortunate. I had breakfast at a diner in downtown Bismarck while I waited for the car. The french toast was amazing; firm and a little bit crispy on the outside and all soft and creamy in the middle. All of the emotion and spirit that made you fall in love with The Butchies and Team Dresch, hushed and distilled down into this collection of 14 songs. It's the narrative of a girl being in love with a girl. Never hitting you over the head, merely giving you enough to imagine the rest of the story. It's presented to us on deceptively simple acoustic guitars, a few electric guitars, some keyboards and beautiful building vocal harmonies. Acoustic pop songs, country ballads, atmospheric anthems. The mood is up and then down, sly then serious, confessional then playful. Because of his generosity to a drunken satyr, he was given the power to turn all he touched into gold, which proved to be--at best--a mixed blessing. The story was later adapted by Midnight Star in the 1986 hit "Midas Touch," which made it to #7 on the R&B Singles chart and #42 on the US Top 100. (It was the last Midnight Star single to make the top 100, though their next single "Don't Rock the Boat" climbed to the #3 R&B spot in 1988.)

Carrying on it the glorious tradition of Midnight Star and drunken satyrs, Wow & Flutter have seen fit to evoke the story of Midas in the title to their latest album Golden Touch, a collection of Phrygian mode jams, drones and ditties. Wow & Flutter have avoided "difficult-sixth-album-syndrome" by splintering and regrouping repeatedly since the last LP back in 2003. After coalescing as a three-piece hot-shit rock combo, with founder/treasurer Cord Amato on vocals/guitars/organ and stalwart multi-threat Jack Houston taking over drum duties, the lineup found its current form with the addition of bass player Ryan Matheson (following recent tour of duty recording and touring with Kind of Like Spitting), replacing Amy Turner, who left the band following the Fluts' last release, 2006's "Elements" single.

Opening track "Red Face" is a taut-n-fuzzy rock blast which highlights the three-piece's loud-fast-simple side. "Car Crash" opts for a more restrained approach--until all hell breaks loose with the de(con)struction of the titular event. "Solar" follows, with a simple chord pattern repeating for three minutes under a coat of beautiful shimmer. This leads into "Eclipse," because where else are you going to put a track called "Eclipse" if there's also a track called "Solar" on your album? "A Little Help" expands the sonic palette with banjo and glockenspiel and a mass choir.

"Heaven" opens side B; a Morricone-influenced intro complete with trumpet and melodica gives way to a religious screed, which gives way to a drunken klezmer coda. "Flat White" intertwines sparse riffs over click-clack percussion along with Amato's ruminations on betrayal. Synthetic slow-jam "Sugarbush" seduces with snake charmer guitar lines and earworm bass groove. Texture sampler "AM/FM" and drone epic "A Fine Line" close out the album. (As an added incentive to those who prefer their music in 12" format, the band is excited to pioneer the title-track-only-available-as-mp3-download-with-purchase-of-vinyl concept.)

Golden Touch was recorded intermittently over several months by John Askew (Tracker) at Type Foundry in industrial North Portland. This album was played entirely by ten musicians in the same room at the same time, all mixed live to 1/4" analog tape. If one person out of the ten missed a note or played the wrong part, the whole take had to be done over. This lack of a safety net gave the recordings a heightened sense of focus and purpose. It was similar to the way that albums were recorded in the fities and sixties, before the Beatles inspired everyone to overthink everything. On A Narrow Way, every instrument leaps off the tape with immediacy and humanity. Meanwhile, the lyrics of the songs deal with the narrow path that people must take to do right in the world. There is fear all around; fear of being different, fear of being the same--and in the middle is the narrow way, a small path that is hard to stay on, but which leads to very good things.

TRACKS

Mountains On Our Backs

Dollar Store Halo

Capillary Webs

Killingsworth Frost

Quoting Dead Comedians

Driveway

Coast To Coast

Bone Noose

Warm Behind The Walls

RELEASE DATE

11/11/2008

The band has arrived. And wouldn't it be nice to put together a tribute release featuring friends both near and afar, not being a "who's who" sort of tribute, but rather a "community" inspired collection of Zeppelin songs. One thing led to another and before he knew it, Rob was sending out a missive through his network, calling for submissions, wondering if anyone would even be interested. At the outset there was no real concern for pedigree, or professionalism, in the traditional manner, the only stipulation was that the tracks had to be good. Fast-forward 6 years, 50 tracks, countless hours of recording, tracking, editing, mastering, talking, drinking, and thinking about all things Led Zeppelin. Calamity Jane was a punk band before punk broke, before grunge made it's way onto the cover of Time and before Riot Grrl made it cool to be an all girl band. They were 3 ladies making music in Olympia, Washington who got on stage and told you how they really felt, and it was not pretty. This is from a time when rock was still dangerous, when the only paths to follow were dark and murky, and this music reflects that perfectly. In 1989 they moved to Portland, OR and for the next 3 years they proceeded to blow the doors off every venue in town. They toured with Fugazi and impressed Kurt Cobain so much that he invited them to open for Nirvana in Argentina. They put out a steady series of singles, and in 1991 the band recorded a landmark album of Northwest fuzz, Martha Jane Cannary. Shearer, Selzer and Farah began writing and recording songs at Portland’s Type Foundry with no commercial ambitions. They simply wanted to take shelter from the chaos of touring and make music together. Ensconced by friendship and solitude, the trio’s shared sensibility to embrace their love for roots folk music has created a beautiful and compelling album. The flowing harmonies of Shearer, Selzer and Farah elevate melody to a suspended state. It is the result of how the shape, range and movement of their voices compliment each other. That dynamic shines bright on every track. On songs like ‘A House a Home’, ‘I Swear I Saw You’ and ‘Closer Than I Should’, the band creates rich layers of sound with sparse instrumentation. The capacity to actualize such lush, voluminous, sound can likely be traced to Selzer’s skill as a producer and sound engineer. It is refreshing to hear an album that has no trace of affectation or a single moment of self-indulgence. A passion for music and making music is the motive behind Alialujah Choir’s debut. Shearer, Selzer and Farah achieve songs that brim with humanity and an openness that may have closed had their ambitions been anything other than the joy of writing and creating beautiful music.

TRACKS

Side A

Alive

Oh, The Lightning

Come To Be

Do You See It?

We

Wine & Want

How Good

Side B

All The Birds

The Rushes

Goodbye

Mist As Me

Liberation Day

RELEASE DATE

3/20/2012

The Golden Bears are Julianna Bright and Seth Lorinczi, housemates, partners, parents and band. Johnson. This is the starting point, the songs that had been kicking around looking for a suitable home, and they found it here. With backing from many of the members of Califone, Johnson made a lush and understated record that has stood the test of the 10 years it’s been around. This is it’s first release on vinyl and it’s a perfect marriage of sound and format, with vinyl’s inherent pop’s and crackles only enhancing the back porch at sunset vibe that permeates these songs. "It's that spontaneous trip to the cabin. Sitting by the lake, wrapped in gentle mountain weather. No one else around but those few close friends. Watching deer graze nearby. Every star is exposed. Skinny-dipping in the lake. Gibson describes La Grande as a place that “people usually pass through on their way to somewhere else, but which contains a certain gravity, a curious energy.” The energy of the title track kicks off the record with a battering ram beat, hitting the ground like a herd of galloping horses. With the Tropicalia pulse, dirt-kicking distortion, whimsical woodwinds and heart murmur hooks on “Lion/Lamb,” and rail-jumping rhythms, majestic melodies and beyond-the-grave broadcasting of “The Rushing Dark,” La Grande plays like an imaginary film score. It’s an album about strength and confidence – about the tension between wildness and domesticity and the courage required to embark upon either path, about asserting one’s will rather than submitting – and it’s a significant departure from Beasts’ subtle meditations on frailty.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0383/4805/files/JB096_LP_SQ_01663b07-5e56-4124-8c00-62084c52a0a3.jpg?v=1792588124
portland-cello-project
Homage

TRACKS

Side A

She Will

Lollipop

That”s My Bitch

All Of The Lights

Side B

H*A*M*

Hey Ya!

Monster

Get By

Lua Descolorida

RELEASE DATE

4/21/2012

The Portland Cello Project continue to take the cello to new musical landscapes with "Homage." The record pays unique homage to everyone from contemporary hip hop artists, to contemporary classical composers, and even baroque styles of music, in every mixture imaginable. Since the group's inception in late 2007, the Portland Cello Project (or, PCP, as their fans affectionately call them), has wowed audiences all over the country with extravagant performances, mixing genres and blurring musical lines and perceptions wherever they go. No two shows are alike, with a repertoire now numbering over 800 pieces of music you wouldn't normally hear coming out of a cello. The Cello Project's stage setup ranges from the very simple (4-6 cellos), to the all out epic (which has included 12 cellos playing with full choirs, winds, brass, and numerous percussionists).

TRACKS

Side A

All Your Hearts Are Shaped Like Stars

Feed A Dead Egg

Knapsack

Heavy Eastern Slopes

Free Advice

Side B

Billy’s Lament

Bad Map #1

Ovulate Breath

North

Held The Hand

RELEASE DATE

5/1/2012

Pellet Gun, a trio from Portland, OR, consists of Dave Snider, Brian Gardiner and Eric Jensen. Their first record, Every Time I Yawn I Cry A Little was recorded at Jackpot Studios in 2002. 10 years, nearly 2 bachelor's degrees, a master's degree and a PhD later, they've returned with blistering new material for their sophomore effort, Great Divide, on Jealous Butcher Records. Recorded at Type Foundry with Adam Selzer, Great Divide is the story of an errant thought traversing a hazy dystopia. Rolling hills collide with asphalt while buckling steel curls upon itself, chasing dusty, swirling mirages. Tongue in cheek at times, Pellet Gun strides comfortably between psychedelic freak fests and bombastic, noise pop. Heavier than their previous effort, Great Divide is angular and experimental; it's big cars, road trips, wanderlust and locomotives. It is collections of lists and affirmations, memories and escape plans, proverbs and fables. The music is chaotic, nostalgic and party hard, without taking itself too seriously. That disc collected Califone’s first two EPs (on Perishable and Road Cone), plus two new songs. For this vinyl reissue we have located four more songs – unreleased outtakes from the final Red Red Meat recording sessions — to complete the package. It’s all you need when it comes to the genesis of this well-regarded Chicago-based group. Califone started as the solo project of singer/ guitarist Tim Rutili in the late 1990s, after the dissolution of his band Red Red Meat. Soon enough, Red Red Meat members Ben Massarella and Tim Hurley joined the group, who recorded with RRM’s Brian Deck as well as at their own space and with Warren Defever in Livonia, MI. “On the first two Califone EPs, we were definitely trying to allow some deep change and possibility into what we were doing, and the door was always wide open to accidental music and automatic writing,” Rutili explains. “We built a lot of this music on accidents and chance occurrences. Some of the songs are really good; some of it sounds like an expedition that got lost in the woods. I was still playing with toy drum machines, cheap or borrowed synths and a cassette 4track, trying to make songs out of all these insane sounds.”

TRACKS

Side A

Canopy

When My Hair Was Long

The Rogue

A Clade Called Cetartiodactyla

Field Guide

We Once Were Dogs

Love Like Light

Side B

The Night Was On To Me

Ants And Crickets

The Children's Arboretum

Ice Lake

Regeneration

The Cabin

Beholden

RELEASE DATE

5/22/2012

Don't let the title throw you off. It's not meant to be funny, or even ironic, it is meant "as is", a frank statement of fact, though you can interpret it however you'd like of course. This is Kaia Wilson's 5th solo album, and it contains her most mature (adult) songwriting to date, along with some incredibly thoughtful production by Seth Lorinczi (The Corin Tucker Band/Golden Bears) and Rob Jones (Jealous Butcher Records). There is nothing slick (and by slick read sterile/perfected) in these recordings; they were done very much one at a time, over a very long period of time, and in different settings (kitchens, basements, bedrooms, studios). Each song was delicately handled as it's own unique creature, never straying from what the composition itself wants. On this album you will find that the songs sound very unique from one to the next, and yet there is still an intrinsic cohesion to them - the heart of the song being fed by the arteries of the engineering/production. TAWIL features guest musicians Jody Bleyle & Marci Martinez (Team Dresch) on bass/drums, Amanda Lawrence (Norfolk and Western) on viola/cello, and Seth Lorinczi (Golden Bears/The Corin Tucker Band) on organ and castanets (!).

TRACKS

Digital Album

Convenience Store 1986

Idaho

Electric vs Steam

Farewell Fine Diners

Three at a Time

Dinosaurs for Friends

Charge

Stepped on a Crack

Dishwasher

Last Night's Blunder

Archeologist

Paté Lengua

RELEASE DATE

5/1/2012

A northwest classic. 12 tracks of open spaces, sparse yet bombastic drummning and perfect guitar tone.

TRACKS

Digital Album

A House, A Home (Featuring Portland Cello Project)

Little Wing

RELEASE DATE

4/10/2012

Lead single from their self titled debut. In a world where the process of listening to and obtaining music has never been cheaper or easier, vinyl is a last hold out. You can tell when you're holding the weight of wax in your hand, that you're connected to what you are doing. The first Builders and Butchers record is also an artifact of a time. Recorded in the living room of a house on SE Division St. in Portland, Oregon in 2007. It was recorded with no expectation, just wanting to document the songs folks had been gathering to sing along to since our first shows in the fall of 2005. The songs having been played only on the street up to that time. At those shows anyone who showed up was handed an instrument and quickly made part of the band. During the recording we attempted to bring that organic singalong rowdiness of the live show into the recording. We brought in about 20 close friends for a Sunday morning booze soaked choir session. We made sure that every instrument of the recording was made of wood and powered by a musician, there are no electric instruments and hardly any effects on this record. If ever there was a record that should've been pressed to vinyl it is this one, and its a damn shame its taken us 6 years to get off our asses and do it.” - Ryan Sollee, September 2012

TRACKS

Side A

Birds Off A Wire

Willamette Valley Ballad

Ramble/Scramble

Revise Your Maps

Sorrow & Shame

True Sparrow

Side B

Find Me

Offering The Blues

Sill (Mt. Drums and vibes. Beats and melody. Random precision through noise.” 1939 Ensemble is a instrumental duo made up of percussionists Jose Medeles (The Breeders) and David Coniglio in Portland, OR. When describing the kind of music of 1939 Ensemble, it’s best to either keep it simple, or talk about it as an analogy.Think about great cities like Chicago and New York, then daydream about what those cities sound like. The history. The pavement. The sounds that are ambient and the sounds you can’t avoid. Music is a disruption. A moment when time is taken and folded in on itself to form what people call a measure, or a bar. Once you have a bar, you can live in it, you can cross over it, be behind it or in front of it. It is not the start of one line, or the end of another. It is a fully formed space that can be entered or exited according to a player’s desire. In this space music is not only a disruption, it becomes for the performer and the listener, freedom. Freedom though, has exacting standards. It’s about purposeful direction, not anarchy. The arch of 1939 Ensemble is an evolution towards those exacting standards that started in pure improvisation, and have shaped themselves at the hands of Jose and David. 1939 Ensemble doesn’t just cross genres, they both embrace and exploit them, inviting each listener in though the familiar, and then leaving them with something new to explore.

TRACKS

Side A

Raisin

Emma’s Rubber Leg

Haywine

Stolen From A Rifle Clean Brothel

King Carp In A Dan Ryan Ditch

Theme From Loftus Nine

Side B

Nervous

Bell And Hammer

Penguin Boy’s Love Story

When The Electricity Goes Out In The Submarine

Marlon Perkins

Cake

Blind

RELEASE DATE

7/9/2013

Loftus finds the members of two bands—Rex and Red Red Meat—collaborating with a dude from Tortoise. It is a wonderful record that tears various genres apart with glee. For the first time ever, this underknown classic of experimental 1990s indie-rock is being released on vinyl. “Red Red Meat had done a few tours with Rex and the Grifters; co-mingling during the shows led to the idea to record,” Massarella says. “We recorded this at Ben's truck stop—still the filthiest place I've ever been,” Rutili relates. “It was a real truck stop; people weighed trucks and cleaned the blood out of meat trucks right there. Ben's dad used to do a radio show in one of the office rooms.” The record was a real collaboration. “Bundy put all our names into a hat; he'd pick three names and we'd improvise,” Rutili says. “When he flicked the lights on and off it was time to stop. We built these pieces into songs.” It may be hard to wrap your head around now, but this gloriously weird thing was originally going to be issued by a major label. Massarella adds that “I don't know why we got signed, but we did. We made the Loftus record and the label immediately folded.” The jackets for this release are silkscreened, with a sandpaper jawbone affixed to the covers, replicating the orignal CD release.

TRACKS

Side A

Rainbow Sign

A Bit Of Wind

Magic Hour

The Little Acorn

Track Rabbits

Side B

Union Blanket

Lazy Eye

Slipping Through The Sensors

Seaweed

When U Love Somebody

RELEASE DATE

10/29/2013

• Brand new pressing on limited edition opaque mint vinyl.

• Updated artwork is a reproduction of one of the hand painted covers from the original 2013 pressing.

"Around the making of the album, Fruit Bats had coalesced into a duo with Gillian Lisée and myself. Gillian was my girlfriend at the time and we had gone through kind of a tumultuous start to things and broke up for a time. In the interim I wrote a bunch of bummed-out love songs that ended up on the record. It was sort of like our own mini cocaine-free version of Rumors. By the time we were making Mouthfuls in the summer of 2002, we were back on and all was good. We also co-wrote Track Rabbits together which is still one of my favorite things I've ever done and probably my favorite song on Mouthfuls. I wrote When U Love Somebody at the very last minute right before we started to record. It was kind of the throwaway track, which of course became by far the most popular song on the album and is still probably the most popular Fruit Bats song. But it took me about 3 minutes to write. I still didn’t have lyrics when we recorded it so I just repeated the one verse I’d written, which is how it stands today. Nowadays there are a lot of clappy-stompy cute songs like this that are not so much my bag, but back then I was just trying to make something that sounded like Ray Davies, or even more specifically The Beatles’ Two of Us. Also, I spelled ‘you’ with a ‘U’ to reference Prince - this was a few years before I’d ever heard of text-speak. Just wanted to clear that up. People still like dancing to this one at our shows and I’m still cool with playing it. Brian Deck was the wizard on this one, plain and simple. I really just wanted to make something that sounded like Nilsson or Ray Davies or psychy-folky, but Brian had the concept for folding in electronics and weirdness. There’s a lot of headphone ear candy on this record, which at times sounds really small-sounding at first listen but is really pretty orchestrated. I am beyond stoked for folks to hear this thing on vinyl for the first time ever, and to play some duct-tape free shows.” - Eric D. (Literally, I rented out a flat above the studio that was an old dentist office.) These recordings were all started from seed in the studio, no rehearsals or demos, and features mostly friends that would happen to stop by. During this time I was producing records for Grand Hallway (Winter Creatures), and Raymond Byron and The White Freighter, and these songs were recorded on the off-days or nights after sessions. The studio, nestled next to the freeway, was below ground level but with floor to ceiling windows looking out into a little foliage perimeter frequented by homeless people, rats, and the occasional crack smoker. Next door was a high-rise apartment complex where you would often witness things such as multi-floor beer bongs, giant underwear drying on the line, and a naked korean guy lifting weights in the window. Studio breaks were spent either at a dive bar called The Commodore (rip) or at the underground egyptian-themed gem called Mummy’s. With this project I was trying to avoid conceptualizing any particular style, or entertaining thoughts about accessibility. I was mainly interested in experimenting with sounds and recording techniques, and embracing whatever natural tendencies both toward melody and dissonance. At the time i seemed to be listening to a lot of different stuff, including Sun Ra, Capt Beefheart, Ornette Coleman, William Onyeabor, Lee Hazelwood, Harry Nilsson, Gram Parsons and maybe even a little Nick Cave. - Cory Gray, December 2013

TRACKS

Side A

Wish Someone Would Care

In The Garden

The Little White Cloud

I Am Free

What A Little Moonlight Can Do

Looking Out The Window

Side B

World So Full Of Love

Dark In My Heart

The Long Way Home

Honest I Do

You Make Me

RELEASE DATE

11/5/2013

As of 11/5/16 we've got 60 more copies of this lovely gem on vinyl! I’ve recorded Shelley more than a few times over the years, and I have yet to hear anything but pure elegance and grace come through the studio monitors. I knew if we got a good band together, performing the songs live-in-the-studio was going to be a ficile endeavor, easily achieved in one or two takes of each song. Contrary to most records these days, this wasn’t going to be pieced together with endless takes, overdubs, punch-ins and editing. We corralled a group of amazing musician friends and even without rehearsing prior to entering the studio, Shelley and the band needed just a few run throughs to work out an arrangement before I was able to let the 2" tape roll.

When Shelley sings, it sounds like what she was born to do. She’s a musician with innate talent. As a youngster, she took piano lessons but faked her way through them by using her ear and keen sensibility. Growing up, there was a ceaseless stream of music filling the house (and in the car, often with family sing-alongs). Her dad, Joe, listened to everything - Nina Rota, Bobby Bare, Thelonious Monk, and of course, Bob Dylan. At age 19 Shelly set out on a cross country journey through the south that led her to the Jimmy Rogers museum and Hank Williams’ grave. Not your typical 19 year-old destination spots. It’s not that she was immune to modern music, in fact, she has an ongoing fascination with Ween. Still, Shelley has always been enthralled with the sounds of yesterday.

Wanting to make a record with these sounds in mind, Shelley asked her dad for help in compiling a list of songs. Joe thought of Oregon’s own Johnny Ray and his rendition of The Little White Cloud. He was an outcast who cried when he sang and Joe thought Shelley could personify his spirit. Peggy Lee’s I’m Looking Out the Window is sophisticated and naive at the same time, a contrast Shelley exemplifies so well here. Shelley also enlisted suggestions from her longtime friend Eric Isaacson, founder of Misissippi Records. Eric made her a cassette tape of contenders including songs by Michael Hurly, Irma Thomas and Lee Hazelwood. Wake The Dreamers is an eclectic collection for sure, but the band's unparalleled creativity and Shelley's captivating voice gives the album a cohesion that makes it sound as if the songs were always meant to be together, even if on two separate sides of a record. - Adam Selzer, 2013, Portland, Ore.

TRACKS

CD 1

In Medford (Cory Gray)

Art Garfunkel’s Old People (Peter Broderick)

CD 2

Emaline (John Askew)

A Solider’s Things (Rauelsson)

RELEASE DATE

9/16/2014

Adam Selzer, who led the band Norfolk & Western and also has toured and recorded with M. That’s what these guys are onto. And, although they are on their own trip, they’ve been compared to Love, Dinosaur Jr., Big Star, and even early R.E.M. Good company. This is the spirit that comes alive in EYELIDS songs: the Beatles meets Television jangle of “Psych #1,” the wistful pleas of “Abby’s Friends,” the beat-your-head-on-the-dashboard croon of “Forget About Tomorrow” and the deserted desperate cries that propel “Say It's Alright”. After a busy five years of touring with Portland-based band Blind Pilot, Kati Claborn was sitting on a steadily growing pile of tunes. As chance would have it, long-time friend and collaborator Erik Clampitt was looking for material and musicians to play a handful of gigs culminating in a show at the San Francisco Old-time and Bluegrass Festival. Songs were dusted off, friends were gathered, and the music that emerged had a voice and cohesion that immediately resonated with audiences and demanded to be more than a mere one-off. The project quickly became a vessel for other member's back-pocket tunes, giving the music breadth and variety. The band consists of Claborn (banjo, guitar), Clampitt (electric guitar, pedal steel), old-time music veteran Gabrielle Macrae (fiddle, banjo, guitar), and fellow Blind Piloters Luke Ydstie (bass, piano), and Ryan Dobrowski (drums).

TRACKS

Side A

The Phoenix Foundation
I WANT MORE

Side B

Eyelids
BURY ME HAPPY

RELEASE DATE

04/18/2015

We originally released this as a 7" for Record Store Day 2015 and completely sold out! We're now offering the tracks as a digital download for your listening enjoyment.

Portland, Oregon and Wellington, New Zealand—unsurprising “sister” cities even despite those 7,125 miles that separates them. Both are small “big” cities with a bustling music scene. This hand-silkscreened limited edition 7” is the product of two bands from these cities—The Phoenix Foundation and Eyelids—and their mutual appreciation for music that is slightly melted in the center and currently running down the sides of your turntable.

Eyelids guitarist Jonathan Drews: “About 10 years ago, I stumbled across a random video of a band from Wellington called The Phoenix Foundation. As to be expected from a New Zealand based musical group, these guys were good. Really good. They quickly became a favorite of ours. It only made sense, then, that we should establish some sort of connection with our distant neighbors.”

The two bands became fast friends and the notion was suggested to do some spirited covers from two of their all time favorite bands (The victims: Australia’s best kept secret The Moles and the legendary German band Can). Peter Buck from R.E.M. produced Eyelids side of the 7” (and even played some acoustic guitar on it), while The Phoenix Foundation recorded with Brett Stanton at the band’s home base,The Car Club.

Samuel Flynn Scott of The Phoenix Foundation: "I think they’re quite enchanted by New Zealand’s musical history and from where we are in the world Portland seems like this magical wonderland where all our favourite US bands end up moving to.
