The title track to The Hackles’ third studio album, “What a beautiful thing I have made” is about longing, regret and all the things that can’t be controlled in life — and how we try to make peace with that reality. The themes weave through the album, personal and weighty but with a sly side of fantasy novel references. (Can you spot the nod to Terry Pratchett? Hint: It’s not turtles all the way down)

Formed in 2017, The Hackles are Kati Claborn (vocals/guitar/banjo/clarinet) and Luke Ydstie (vocals/guitar/bass/keys) of Blind Pilot, and Halli Anderson (vocals/violin) of River Whyless and Horse Feathers. Claborn and Ydstie also play regularly with Horse Feathers as well as folk legend Michael Hurley and “cosmic country lawn gnome” Bart Budwig.

The Hackles’ new album pushes the trio’s experimental folk sound and interest in playing with harmony, voice and genre. It is an album firmly rooted in place, written from their homes above the Columbia River in Astoria, Ore., and recorded in the Astoria-based Rope Room studio.

    The band says:
"For several years we lived and worked on our friend's farm when we were home from touring.

We built fences, repaired outbuildings, dug rows, and witnessed the farm's continual cycle of birth and decay- something always growing and something always falling apart. Over time, leftover scraps from projects and various rusty items coalesced into a visually arresting pile of garbage. We developed a deep appreciation for this garbage pile, admiring it more than many of our more intentional constructions.

In making this record, we tried to hold the songs not too tightly, so that they might morph bit by bit into something more compelling, beautiful & weird than our initial understanding of them.

We threw ideas on the pile till it became something that spoke to us and surprised us.
A reimagining of The Pile by artist Will Elias graces the cover of this forthcoming album "What a beautiful thing I have made." Recorded in Astoria, Oregon in 2021-22, it is our third studio album, and will be available in The World on April 7th."
